Furniture Animation – Task Chair Assembly

Trinity Animation developed this informative 3D furniture animation to serve as an instructional video for new purchasers of the Quantum 9000 office chair, manufactured by Raynor. It clearly and delightfully demonstrates the product’s advanced features and instructs how to assemble the chair, providing customers with a convenience product satisfaction. The client provided Trinity Animation with the script and rough description of how they wanted the 3D animation video to look, however, many aspects were left up to Trinity artists to decide.

This image from Trinity's furniture animation displays the 3D rendered office chair that Trinity animators remodeled using 3D software for this instructional animation. This medium shot displays the seat, armrest, and part of the backrest all rendered with hyper realistic textures on a simple white background.
Trinity artists have created eye-catching 3D renderings of the Quantum 9000 Office Chair based on the 3D  manufacturing provided by Raynor. This image displays some of the photo-real textures that Trinity’s artists re-created through the use of state-of-the-art 3D software.

Through the use of 3D animation, Trinity artists have the ability to manipulate the movements of the office chair in unique ways that live footage can’t accomplish. In this instructional 3D animation video, the office chair is smoothly maneuvered through wide open space without force from a visible actor, which minimizes distractions and engages viewers through the movements of the chair. For instance, during the construction of the chair, each individual part is promptly shifted, flipped, and placed in a way that effectively communicates the information to viewers. In another scene, multiple office chairs assemble into a dynamic configuration where they engage in sequential twirling movements, which is an intriguing movement that is easily accomplished in 3D software. Unlike live footage, Raynor’s marketing department could display any sequence of movements they could imagine, which might help the consumer understand their products usefulness.

Trinity’s 3D animation can readily match the accuracy of live footage, with its ability to product phot-real images. The fabric, metal, mesh, and plastic of the chair are rendered with photograph –like qualities to provide viewers with a fully accurate representation of the product. To produce the final 3D model of the office chair for this animation video, the client provided Trinity animators with the original 3D model that was used to manufacture the molds, however, Trinity artists then remodeled it to produce hyper-realistic textures and details.  Additionally, through 3D software, Trinity animators were able to conveniently produce multiple replicas of the chair to display all of the available color options. Once these models are produced the customer can return in future seasons and take advantage of the work.  Trinity artists can start with the base of the existing model and make any updates the client needs to display new models, fabric, textures and other features.

Trinity artists have complete control over lighting, background, and camera movements. Quick but precise camera movements vary back and forth between close-up and distance image shots which display each individual lever and the action it performs. Many of the levers on this chair are hidden and located under the seat, so Trinity artists determined what the best solution was to clearly display where the lever is, what it does, and how it works. For this 3D furniture animation video, they chose a simple white background allowing the main focus to be the office chair. The controlled lighting through 3D software gives it a clean, detailed, professional look. This method is more convenient compared to capturing live footage which involves securing an appropriate physical photography studio as well as lighting and human photographers.

This still image is from the 3D informational furniture animation that Trinity Animation completed. This image is a close-up side view of the 3D modeled office chair displaying the motion in which you can adjust the seat. All elements of the chair are rendered hyper- realistically displayed on a whit background with blue text in the upper right hand corner, instructing how to move the lever to adjust the seat.
Extreme close up shots, like this one, portray photo-realism that can easily be mistaken for live imagery. This shot displays the textures that Trinity 3D artists are able to create inside of 3D software while informing viewers about the seat adjustments that are available for this furniture animation.

This is still image is from the furniture animation that Trinity animators produced. It displays a close-up of the lever that is used to adjust the seat height. The lever is hyper-realistically rendered and clearly in focus while other elements are blurred so the viewer understands which lever to pull. 2D graphic symbols are used to signify whether or not the lever is locked, and text is also displayed on the right side of the screen to clarify which direction to pull the lever.

The lever is rendered realistically and is clearly in focus while other elements are blurred so the viewer understands which lever to pull.
This is a profile view of the 3D modeled office chair from Trinity's furniture animation that provides more information about the range of tilt tension accompanied by linear marks, an arc, and a spiral graphic to illustrate the springy effect that it has.
In this scene from Trinity’s furniture animation, angle measurements appear along the backrest of the office chair to provide more information about the range of tilt tension accompanied by linear marks, an arc, and a spiral graphic to illustrate the springy effect that it has.

Another element of this 3D furniture animation video that was highly influenced by Trinity artists are the 2D motion graphics which label components and communicate its functions more precisely than oral narration alone. For example, in the scene displayed to the right, angle measurements appear along the backrest of the office chair to provide more information about the range of tilt tension accompanied by linear marks, an arc, and a spiral graphic to illustrate the springy effect that it has. These 2D texts and symbols that appear throughout many different scenes in this 3D animation video are used to provide more clarity and contribute a more visually pleasing effect.

Provided with the client’s script, Trinity’s artists successful recorded the narration implemented by a Trinity animator – executing a clear, professional, yet warm and inviting tone.  The upbeat background music was chosen by Trinity artists as well. This skill is valuable to clients because Trinity is able to produce well-rounded animations that are professional in all aspects, even sound, that can potentially benefit a client’s product.

This is a still image from the furniture animation of the 3D model office chair that Trinity Animation created. It displays the underneath side of the seat of the chair to explain where each individual part goes when constructing it. 2D graphics are also used to label certain parts of the office chair that correspond with the instruction manual.
As Trinity artists develop the furniture animation they select views that efficiently present the individual parts from the angle that depicts the chair in the most easily understood way. This image displays the bottom side of the office chair to instruct where each individual piece is inserted so the viewer can easily construct it. 2D graphics are also used to label certain parts of the office chair that corresponds with the instruction manual.
